2016 was a fantastic year for Nelson Airport, with significant growth, record passenger numbers and the introduction of more flights into and out of the region. To cap that off December 2016 was the Airport’s best month ever.
93,557 passengers flew into or out of the Airport during the month, up 17% on the same time in 2015. Air New Zealand recorded its best month ever in Nelson, and Jetstar saw a 10% increase on its Nelson/Auckland route.
One of the outcomes of all this activity is that Air New Zealand has increased its scheduled flights to/from Nelson for January 2017.
This growth is in-keeping with the region experiencing visitor growth of 20% over the holiday period compared to 2015/16. March is traditionally Nelson Airport’s busiest month.
“2016 was a fantastic year for Nelson Airport. We saw record growth and started on our Airport redevelopment project that will see the facility morph into a regional gateway that is more suited to our passenger numbers and the experience we want to deliver to our customers,” said Rob Evans, Nelson Airport CEO.
“Work is underway on the relocation of the Airport control tower, and Airport users will start to see the first signs of the terminal redevelopment work taking place in the next month as we gear up for what will be a very significant 12-18 months for us. If members of the public want to keep updated on progress with the redevelopment they can follow that on our new website at www.nelsonairport.co.nz”.
