Renovation to reinstate operations at airport hangar

A large World War II era-hangar at Nelson Airport is to be renovated to once again support the servicing of aircraft in the Nelson region.

Hangar 2 is a ‘Type B’ heritage listed structure most recently used for aircraft maintenance, but, due to deterioration of the building, is not currently operational.

Nelson-based aircraft interior production and repair company Generation Global has recently purchased the hangar and is undertaking the renovations in order to use the building for the fitout and refurbishment of aircraft.

While much of Generation Global’s commercial production takes place out of its Malaysian facility and exported globally, Nelson is an important base for the refurbishment of private aircraft and the renovations to Hangar 2 will allow the company to continue to grow its local activities by providing a suitable covered storage facility.

“We are really pleased to welcome Generation Global to Nelson Airport,” says Nelson Airport Chief Executive Mark Thompson. “Generation Global is a real local success story and it is great to be able to help them maintain a base of operations here.”

Hangar 2 will be very familiar to users of Nelson Airport as it is located to the right as you enter the airport.

“When it comes to the renovation plans for the hangar, considerable effort has gone into preserving the heritage value and aesthetics of the building,” Mark says.

The original form of the building, including the original steel structure, will be maintained and its lifespan extended through the use of an adapted skin of cladding. Notable design elements, such as the banded appearance on the building, gabled building form, and broad hangar opening and sliding door system, will remain unchanged or be reinstated. This will mean that the building will remain recognisable as a mid-century aircraft hangar.

“The plans to once again use Hangar 2 for aircraft servicing activities fits with Nelson Airport’s objectives to protect the operational capability of the airport, improve aircraft servicing capability and provide associated airport development through the upgrade of facilities,” Mark says.

Renovation work on Hangar 2 is expected to begin in late February and be carried out over the next six months. The renovation work will not impact day-to-day activities at Nelson Airport.
